The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a new way to get more than one drug, called "Sildenafil" by its National Drug Corporation (NDC) subsidiary, to the U. market.
The drug, a combination of Sildenafil Citrate and Tadalafil, will be sold to the public in the U. as the generic form of Viagra, the agency said in a statement.
The drug will be sold at a total retail price of $50 a tablet.
"This new way of getting a new drug for the U. market is a good step forward in bringing Viagra to the American market," said Dr. Scott Gottlieb, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The FDA's review of the drug indicates that it is effective and safe in treating erectile dysfunction. It has not been shown to work for other conditions that are linked to erectile dysfunction.
The drug, which has been approved for the treatment of hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension, will be available in the U. from August through May 2014.
The FDA also approved the company's patent on Sildenafil Citrate, also known by its generic name sildenafil citrate. Other drugs containing sildenafil are available as brand names such as Viagra.
The company was also granted a license to Cialis, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, after the FDA granted the company a license to sell the drug on the U.
Cialis was approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men only, but the company is not required to disclose that information to the public.
The drug also is being marketed by Cialis as a treatment for enlarged prostate and benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, Gottlieb said.
"We are very excited to bring this new treatment to the U. market, as it is one of the most important new medications in the pharmaceutical world," he said.
"Today's approval will allow Cialis to bring the treatment to patients who need it. It will also help men who are suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia to see a better quality of life."
Cialis was approved in June 2013 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. It was approved to treat erectile dysfunction in up to 80 percent of men with BPH, and is the only approved treatment for this condition.

Gottlieb said the FDA has not given the company information about the drug's potential risks or side effects.
"It will be the first time a drug is being sold in the U. to treat an erection, and we are confident that the FDA will be able to do this before the end of the year," he said. "We also believe the FDA will be able to help the American public with a drug that works."
The drug will be sold at a total retail price of $50, including free shipping to customers who are unable to obtain it at their local pharmacies.
